Chandrolsavam

In "Chandrolsavam", director Ranjit has opted for a softer, philosophical approach of storytelling. His trademark is there but it is very subdued.

One of the most respected directors in Malayalam cinema today, Ranjit, credited with creating a larger-than-life image for Mohanlal, has time and again proved that he can pull it off if he teams up with the megastar - as a writer or a writer-director - despite pessimism from his detractors.

But lesser writers and directors seem to have now milked his success-mantra dry.

There are sparks that would make the viewer nostalgic and desiring more of the same. But that is hard to come by.

Instead, you get a protagonist - a failed lover with a nomadic nature, who does not mind wallowing in his misery.

The story begins when Srihari (Mohanlal) returns to his native place from a self-imposed, six-year exile in Paris where he has also served a one-year jail term for a crime he did not commit.

He has returned to settle old scores. We bolt up as our expectations soar - but we have to wait for that till the interval.

The storyline is complicated. It all starts from Srihari's childhood - when two of his friends Balachandran and Ramanunni lust for the same girl Indu (Meena).

Indu loves Srihari but Balachandran deviously marries her. He nearly gets killed on the wedding day by Ramanunni's man but the blame falls on Srihari.

Srihari's return is not to wreak revenge. It is to attain as much joy as possible in his last days, as he is terminally ill.

There are missing links in the story. Mohanlal has experimented with his looks, but his performance seems to be held back.

Meena, on the other hand, is surprising. Her character is not in the usual glam doll mould, which is refreshing.

Of the supporting cast, the much-hyped cameos by Kushboo and Dakshinamoorthy look apt.

Others including Jagadeesh and Cochin Haneefa look predictable.

The audience expects fire and brimstone from a Ranjith movie. But they are in for a rude shock.

It is not that that Ranjith has not made any soft films. There is "Maya Mayooram", which he had scripted for Sibi Malayil in the late 80s.

In recent times, there were "Nandanam" and "Mizhirandilum" meeting with varying degrees of success.

One just hopes that he finds his form again soon.

Alice in Wonderland

Sometimes you cry at the movies out of sheer boredom. Just watching Alice in wonderland and wondering if this is the same Sibi Malayil who directed classic films (Bharatham, Kireedom) and entertainers (Summer in Bethlehem, Dasaratham in the past?

There is no sense and style in this helter-skelter endeavour trying to cash in on a brother’s steamy sentimental love for his mentally challenged sister who turns violent at the drop of a hat. Jayaram’s character has shades of Mammootty in Kali oonjal in which Shalini played his sister.

Alby (Jayaram) runs a workshop and is shown as a mechanic but lives like a king in a newly brought palace sort of house in Ooty! His sister Alice (Sandhya) is mentally challenged after a shock (which is not explained well) and gets violent at each and every turn. Alby lives for her and tries to dance to her tunes on the advice of her doctor (Jyothirmayi) to avoid her from falling into frequent bout of depression!

Though Alice’s doctor suggests that she should be put in a mental asylum, Alby refuses and allows the mentally ill girl to walk around freely creating problems for people around. However Alice has a past as she is the mother of a four-year-old girl who is kept away from her as she hates the child. The child grows up in an orphanage under the eyes of a priest (Jagathy) and Alby takes care of her.

Sophie, a research scholar ( Laya) meets Alby and falls in love with him (?) after hearing his story. Meanwhile Alice gets attracted to Victor (Vineeth) a roadside magician but Alby does not approve of it. The rest of the film is how Victor helps Alice to recover from her illness and reunites her with the child.

How will the viewer digest this unbelievable yarn that is told in an old fashioned way and moves at snail pace? It is one of Sibi’s worst movies in recent times and a talented actor like Jayaram is totally wasted in a role that he sleepwalks. Sandhya , the new girl on whom the story revolves has given a commendable performance though the story and screenplay lets her down. Laya was reduced to an extra’s role while Sukumari, Jagathy, Janardhanan and others look like caricatures. Vineeth irritates you with his body language and mannerisms and it is sad that the actor is reduced to doing such inept roles.

The music of Vidyasagar is nothing to write about and on the whole, it is a sleep-inducing film. Sibi Malayil is clearly in blunderland!

Daddy Day Care

When a father (Murphy) loses his lucrative "dotcom" job, and finds himself in jeopardy of financial ruin, he joins his friends (Zahn, Garlin) in opening a free-spirited "guy-run" business called "Daddy Day Care" (in his house), much to the chagrin of the owner (Huston) of a more traditionally-operated rival center.

Mallrats

When a couple of well-meaning slackers, T.S. (Jeremy London) and Brodie (Jason Lee), lose their girlfriends, they set about trying to reclaim their pride (and their ladies) in the most obvious of places--the mall. Once there, the pair push the limits of decency and mall etiquette, encountering an array of mall denizens, including Jay and Silent Bob from CLERKS and legendary comic book creator Stan Lee. A surprising number of misadventures ensue, bringing the boys the possibility of regaining their lady loves.

Shaolin Soccer

Hong Kong satirist Stephen Chow wrote, directed, and stars in this spoof of sports and kung fu movie cliches.
Chow plays "Mighty Steel Leg" Sing, who can kick soda cans through walls, and is a natural soccer star in the eyes of crippled coach Fung (Patrick Se Yin), who is looking to challenge his arch rival Hung, the captain of the aptly named Evil Team. Recruiting Sing and his goofy brothers who all have names like Steel Head, Hook Kick Leg, and Weight Vest (with qualities to match), Hung's team soon rises through the ranks via their supernatural Kung Fu soccer skills. There's also a love interest in the form of a shy girl (Vicki Zhao Wei) who uses martial arts magic in making steamed bread.

The Rock

In Michael Bay's THE ROCK, gung-ho general Francis Hummel (Ed Harris), armed with deadly chemical rockets and aided by violent cohorts, takes over the island of Alcatraz, holding 81 tourists hostage. Hummel promises to deploy the missiles over San Francisco if Washington doesn't make amends to ignored combat victims to the tune of $100 million.

A cadre of Navy SEALs are dispatched to quell the situation, assisted by the mysterious, macho John Mason (Sean Connery), the only man to ever escape from Alcatraz, who must now help the SEALs break back in. Joining them is mild-mannered chemical weapons expert Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage), who is unaccustomed to such things as guns and military maneuvers. Their high-octane mission is filled with surprises, particularly after Hummel and company quickly annihilate the SEALs--leaving Mason and Goodspeed to save the day all by themselves.

Balettan

"Mohanlal", one of the finest actors in the country, is going through tough times at the box-office. He is desperate for a hit and Balettan is another attempt by him to re-invent himself in a family entertainer. The director of the film, V.M.Vinu has included lots of comedy in the first half and turns the second half into a steamy tearjerker.

However the script on the whole does not live up to these better moments as too many characters, mainly comedy artists, pop in and out in the first half. It is obvious that the director has been watching too many sob stories including Lohithadas's Valsalyam while making the film.

Balachandran (Mohanlal) is an accountant in a coperative bank, happily married to Radhika(Devayani) and has two children. Balettan as everybody lovingly calls him is a do-gooder and simpleton. His father, a retired postmaster (Nedumudi Venu), dies after confessing to Balachandran about his second wife and two daughters. Balettan keeps this as a secret and looks after his stepsisters without the knowledge of his wife and brother Sudhi (Sudheesh). The rest of the story is all about how Balettan tries to protect his father's image by telling lies which leads to flashpoints in his personal life.In the climax Kalabhavan Mani makes an entry as the person who sets everything right for our Balettan!”
